LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF ELASTOMERIC BRIDGE BEARING PADS
THE USE OF ELASTOMERIC PADS AS BRIDGE BEARINGS ARE BEING INVESTIGATED BECAUSE OF THEIR ECONOMICS, MAINTENANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS UNDER COMPRESSION AND SHEAR LOADS. THE ELASTOMERS INVESTIGATED WERE NEOPRENE, BUTYL RUBBER AND CHLORINATED BUTYL RUBBER /CHLOROBUTYL/. THE EFFECTS OF ACCELERATED AGING AND LOAD-BEARING PROPERTIES AT LOW TEMPERATURES ARE BEING INVESTIGATED. ALL THREE PRODUCTS HAD EQUAL COMPRESSIVE AND SHEAR LOAD-DEFORMATION PROPERTIES WHEN EVALUATED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, SHOWED RESISTANCE TO ACCELERATED AGING, AND HAD THE SAME DYNAMIC AND STATIC CREEP PROPERTIES. THE BUTYL AND CHLOROBUTYL BEARING PADS WERE TWO TO THREE TIMES MORE FLEXIBLE THAN THE NEOPRENE PAD AND RETAINED THEIR LOW-TEMPERATURE FLEXIBILITY ADVANTAGE EVEN AFTER ACCELERATED AGING CONDITIONS.
