BRIDGE DECK REPAIR TECHNIQUES ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE

THE REPAIR TECHNIQUES FOR THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE BRIDGE DECKS ARE BEING DISCUSSED. FIELD INSPECTIONS WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE DEVELOPMENT AND CAUSE OF SPALLING. A THEORY OF THE CAUSE OF SPALLING SUGGESTS THAT SALT WATER IS ADMITTED INTO FINE SURFACE CRACKS IN THE WINTER. THE FREEZE- THAW ACTION AND FREQUENCY OF HEAVY AXLE LOADINGS THEN TENDS TO WIDEN AND DEEPEN THE CRACKS AND THE SALT WATER REACHES THE REINFORCING BARS WHICH BEGIN TO OXIDIZE. THE STEEL EXPANSION DURING OXIDATION AND FREEZE-THAW CYCLES CAUSES THE CRACKED CONCRETE TO POP OUT AND A SPALL DEVELOPS. THE REPAIR TECHNIQUES INCLUDE' COMPLETELY REPLACING ALL SERIOUSLY DAMAGED SLABS, USING AREA REPAIRS AND PATCHES ON MODERATELY DAMAGED SLABS, AND PREVENTION OF SPALLING. FOR AREA PATCHING, A TOPPING TECHNIQUE CAN BE USED WHERE NEW CONCRETE IS LAID ON TOP OF A BOND COAT OF METALLIC AGGREGATE GROUT OVER THE OLD CONCRETE. SURFACE SEALING WITH WATER PROOFING SURFACE MATERIALS OF COAL-TAR EPOXY RESIN WERE USED. A NEW BRIDGE DECK DESIGN WAS FORMULATED CONSISTING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB, A COAL-TAR EPOXY RESIN WATERPROOFING SEALER AND ASBESTOS NEOPRENE ASPHALT WEARING COURSE.
