CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE IN ILLINOIS
THE EARLIEST ILLINOIS CRCP DATES TO 1947, AND FOUR EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENTS WERE CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1961 AND 1965 WITH THE HELP OF THE BPR. SINCE 1965 THIS DESIGN WAS ADOPTED FOR STANDARD USE ON INTERSTATE PROJECTS AND OTHER PRIMARY ROUTES WITH COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC VOLUMES HEAVY ENOUGH TO REQUIRE ITS USE. AT THE BEGINNING OF 1970 THERE WERE 1200 MILES OF TWO-LANE CRCP IN THE STATE. IN GENERAL, THEIR PERFORMANCE IS SATISFACTORY. THE FEW ISOLATED FAILURES APPEAR TO BE ATTRIBUTABLE TO CONSTRUCTION ERRORS; THESE ERRORS AND DISCUSSED. OTHER TOPICS TREATED IN DETAIL ARE TRANSVERSE CRACKING AND ANCHOR SYSTEMS.
