LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF ROADS AS AFFECTED BY FROST ACTION

THE PROJECT WAS ESTABLISHED TO DETERMINE THE WEAKENING EFFECT OF FREEZING AND THAWING ON THE NORMAL CARRYING CAPACITY OF HIGHWAYS; THE FIRST REPORT MADE TO THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD HAD INDICATED THAT THE LOSS IN CARRYING CAPACITY MIGHT BE AS MUCH AS 60 PERCENT. THIS REPORT COVERS THE WORK OF THE VARIOUS STATES TAKING PART; CONTRIBUTING RESEARCH DATA ARE REVIEWED AND DISCUSSED. RESEARCH DATA GATHERED DURING 1949 APPEAR TO POINT TOWARD AGREEMENT WITH TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS REACHED IN PREVIOUS YEARS, AND CONTINUED FULL-SCALE PLATE BEARING TESTS, AS WELL AS INSTRUMENT TESTS, CONFIRM THE LOSS OF NORMAL ROAD STRENGTH, WITH SUBSEQUENT RECOVERY FOLLOWING THE THAWING OUT OF FROST. SOME PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN CORRELATING INSTRUMENT TESTING WITH PLATE BEARING TESTING, WHICH IS ALSO ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT. /AUTHOR/
