LENGTHWISE ORIENTATED AND STIFFENED SLAB-LIKE STRUCTURAL PARTS ARE SEPARATED IN PRACTICE INTO SMALLER AREAS BY TRANSVERSE BEAMS ABOUT 2.5 TO 6.0 M LONG. IF THE LONGITUDINAL STIFFENERS BEHAVE AS A BUCKLING BAR, THE BUCKLED LENGTH IN THE CASE OF "STIFF" TRANSVERSE BEAMS IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TRANSVERSE BEAMS. WITH "SOFT" TRANSVERSE BEAMS THE BUCKLED LENGTH IS GREATER. THIS CORRESPONDS TO CALCULATIONS MADE ACCORDING TO CONVENTIONAL LINEAR BUCKLING THEORY, IN WHICH THE BUCKLING IS IN THE FORM OF A SINUSOIDAL LINE. ONLY SOME OF THE TESTS CARRIED OUT HITHERTO SHOWED THE EXPECTED SINUSOIDAL LINE. IN THE REST OF THE TEST SLABS, ALL THE SUB-AREAS DEFORMED IN THE SAME DIRECTION. ALL THE SLABS TESTED SO FAR HAD STIFF TRANSVERSE BEAMS. TWO SLABS HAVING "SOFT" TRANSVERSE BEAMS ARE NOW TO BE STUDIED, USING THE SAME TEST RIG.
