PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS AS RELATED TO SUBGRADES, SUBBASES AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN
THE EVOLUTION OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT IN NEW JERSEY OVER THE PAST 35 YEARS IS TRACED TO SHOW HOW THE CURRENT EMPIRICAL DESIGN CRITERIA WERE DERIVED. IN TRYING TO PREVENT THE PAVEMENT FAILURES CAUSED BY AN EVER-INCREASING NUMBER OF HEAVY TRUCKS, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE ECONOMICAL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WAS TO CONSTRUCT A MORE STABLE FOUNDATION RATHER THAN TO INCREASE THE SURFACE THICKNESS. THE INFLUENCE OF STABILIZED SHOULDERS ON PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE HAS ALSO BEEN RECOGNIZED. SECTIONS OF PAVEMENT ON TWO OF THE MAJOR TRUCKING ROUTES ARE EVALUATED IN THIS PAPER. FOR EACH SECTION, PERTINENT INFORMATION REGARDING THE SUBGRADE, SUBBASE, PAVEMENT, AND TRAFFIC IS INCLUDED. /AUTHOR/
