PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE SURVEYS

THE PERFORMANCE SURVEY DESCRIBED IN THIS REPORT WAS MADE IN AN EFFORT TO DETERMINE THE CAUSES OF PREMATURE FAILURE, APPARENTLY DUE TO LACK OF DURABILITY, OF CERTAIN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS ON THE OHIO HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THE SURVEY COVERED 375 PROJECTS TOTALING 1,115 LANE MILES OF PAVEMENT. DETAILS OF THE METHOD USED IN OHIO TO OBTAIN FIELD DATA ON EACH PROJECT ARE DESCRIBED IN THE PAPER, AS ARE THE METHODS FOR RATING THE PAVEMENTS ACCORDING TO: (1) EXTENT OF SURFACE SCALE, (2) DEGREE OF SURFACE SCALE, AND (3) PROGRESSIVE SCALE OR DISINTEGRATION. THE METHOD USED IN ADJUSTING SUCH RATINGS ACCORDING TO THE AGE OF THE PAVEMENT IS ALSO DESCRIBED. FROM SUCH RATINGS THE NUMEROUS VARIABLES PRESENT IN THE SURVEY SUCH AS CEMENTS, FINE AGGREGATES, COARSE AGGREGATES, CURING METHOD, ETC., WERE ALSO RATED. THE RATINGS OF THESE VARIABLES WERE THEN USED BY PROCESS OF ELIMINATION TO ISOLATE QUESTIONABLE MATERIALS AND PRACTICES. /AUTHOR/
