BEHAVIOUR OF GRAVEL-CEMENT PAVEMENTS BUILD SINCE 1966 IN SOUTH-WEST FRANCE

COMPORTEMENT DES CHAUSSEES EN GRAVES-CIMENT REALISEES DEPUIS 1966 DANS LE SUD-OUEST

GRAVEL-CEMENT MIXTURES HAVE BEEN WIDELY USED IN SOUTH-WEST FRANCE FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, IN ROADBASES AND STRENGTHENING OF HIGHWAYS AND URBAN ROADS. IN THE BEGINNING THEY WERE USED IN TWO THIN LAYERS (10 TO 15 CM) UNDER A WEARING COURSE CONSISTING OF A SURFACE DRESSING OR THIN BITUMINOUS LAYER (4 TO 5 CM). BEHAVIOUR WAS SATISFACTORY UNDER LIGHT TRAFFIC BUT AS SOON AS A FEW HEAVY VEHICLES USED THE ROAD, RAPID DETERIORATION WAS OBSERVED. IT WAS THEN DECIDED TO DEVELOP THIS TECHNIQUE FOR HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED PAVEMENTS USING RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS, FOLLOW-UP STUDIES AND IN-SITU NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (DEFLECTOGRAPH, RD, GOODMAN VIBRATOR). IT VERY SOON BECAME NECESSARY TO INCREASE THE THICKNESSES OF GRAVEL-CEMENT MIXTURES AND OF THE BITUMINOUS COVER. AS EARLY AS 1968, THE CONSTRUCTION OF SUITABLE STRUCTURES ENABLED HIGH LEVEL-OF-SERVICE PAVEMENTS TO BE OBTAINED. SATISFACTORY EVENNESS, NO MAJOR DETERIORATION DURING NORMAL MAINTENANCE E.G. RENEWAL OF THE WEARING COURSE (SURFACE DRESSING OR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE) WITHIN 5 TO 10 YEARS ACCORDING TO TRAFFIC.
