VOLUME CHANGES IN SAND-GRAVEL CONCRETE
TESTS WERE MADE IN AN EFFORT TO DETERMINE THE CAUSES OF THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF CERTAIN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS IN WHICH A NATURALLY OCCURRING MIXTURE OF SAND AND GRAVEL (PLATTE RIVER GRAVEL) WAS USED AS TOTAL AGGREGATE. VOLUME CHANGE DETERMINATIONS WERE MADE ON COMBINATIONS OF PLATTE RIVER GRAVEL, A CALCARCEOUS GRAVEL, AND A SILICEOUS GRAVEL IN THREE GRADATIONS. FOUR CEMENTS DIFFERING CONSIDERABLE IN CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WERE USED. TESTS REVEALED ABNORMAL EXPANSION IN ALL COMBINATIONS WHICH INVOLVED PLATTE RIVER GRAVEL AS TOTAL AGGREGATE. THE CHARACTER OF THE MATERIAL, RATHER THAN ITS FINE GRADING, WAS RESPONSIBLE. ADDITION OF CRUSHED LIMESTONE TO THE GRAVEL REDUCED THE EXPANSION TO VALUES COMPARABLE TO THOSE OBTAINED WITH OTHER AGGREGATES.
