THE CHARACTERISTICS OF VIBRATIONS CAUSED BY EARTHQUAKES DO NOT DEPEND SOLELY ON THE SEISMIC SHOCK. LOCAL GEOLOGY, THE CONDITIONS OF THE SURFACE LAYERS AND TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION INFLUENCE THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE. HOWEVER THE PROJECT ENGINEER CAN PREVENT OR REDUCE TO A MINIMUM THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY AN EARTHQUAKE BY APPROPRIATE DESIGN, BY APPLYING CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS STRICTLY, BY A JUDICIOUS CHOICE OF THE SITE AND BY ADAPTING URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING PROJECTS. THIS SUPPOSES THAT A CLOSE COOPERATION EXISTS BETWEEN THE SEISMOLOGIST AND THE ENGINEER SO AS TO DETERMINE THE DATA NECESSARY FOR DESIGN. CORRELATION MUST BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE INTENSITIES OF THE SHOCK IN EACH ZONE AND THE VALUES NECESSARY TO THE SEISMIC ENGINEER: ACCELERATION, VELOCITY AND DISPLACEMENT OF THE SOIL. IN THE CASE OF STANDARD STRUCTURES, EQUIVALENT STATIC FORCES CAN BE CALCULATED USING THE ABOVE VALUES AND NORMAL GEOTECHNICAL STUDY RESULTS.
