THE BUCKLING OF PIN-JOINTED COLUMNS
THE ELASTIC BUCKLING OF PIN-JOINTED COLUMNS IS ANALYZED FROM A GEOMETRICAL POINT OF VIEW. A FORMULA IS DERIVED FOR THE DEFINITION OF THE BUCKLING CRITERIA; THIS FORMULA IS IN FACT SIMILAR TO THE STANDARD EULER FORMULA. THE IMPROVEMENT THUS OBTAINED IS SIGNIFICANT FOR SHORT COLUMNS MADE OF RUBBER OR CERTAIN PLASTIC MATERIALS. FOR MATERIALS OF THIS TYPE, ELASTIC STRESS LIMITS ARE HIGH AND THIS IMPLIES A COEFFICIENT OF SLENDERNESS BELOW WHICH THERE CAN NEVER BE DRY BUCKLING. THIS LIMIT IS A FUNCTION OF POISSON'S RATIO AND OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE COLUMN CROSS SECTION.
