FREE TORSION TEST. AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF FOUNDATIONS SUBJECTED TO LAND VIBRATION WAVES

THE MEASUREMENT OF TRANSVERSE WAVE PROPAGATION VELOCITY GIVES THE POSSIBILITY OF CALCULATING FAIRLY SIMPLY THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF SHEAR OF UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES. ALTHOUGH THE SHEAR FORCES APPLIED TO THE SOIL (AS OPPOSED TO CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS) LEAD TO CHANGES IN VOLUME (EXCEPT IN SAMPLES WITH A CRITICAL DENSITY), THE LABORATORY TEST IS CARRIED OUT WITH THE EQUIPMENT PROPOSED BY L ZEEVAERT IN SUCH A WAY THAT THESE VOLUME CHANGES ARE NEGLIGIBLE. A NON-DISTURBED SAMPLE OF DIAMETER D = 100 MM AND HEIGHT H = 2 D IS PLACED, ONCE DRAINED, IN A LITTLE-MODIFIED TRIAXIAL CELL. UNDER A LATERAL PRESSURE SIGMA INDEX C WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY DETERMINED, AND AFTER CONSOLIDATION, A SLIGHT TORSIONAL MOMENT IS APPLIED ON THE SAMPLE. BY REMOVING THIS TORSIONAL MOMENT (APPROXIMATELY 1 NM) THE ELASTIC REACTION OF THE SAMPLE CAUSES A DAMPENED OSCILLATION THAT IS MEASURED AND RECORDED.
