PAVEMENT FRICTION MEASUREMENTS
METHODS FOR DETERMINING PAVEMENT FRICTION ARE REVIEWED, AND THE GENERALIZED CONCEPT OF RUBBER FRICTION IS DISCUSSED. RESULTS OF RESEARCH IN FRICTION MEASUREMENTS IN THE FIELD AND THE LABORATORY ARE PRESENTED. THESE RESULTS LEAD TO THE SUGGESTION THAT THE PRESENT DUAL BRAKING SYSTEM OF AMERICAN CARS, IN WHICH ONE SUBSYSTEM SERVES THE FRONT WHEELS AND THE OTHER THE REAR ONES, BE MODIFIED TO A DUAL-DIAGONAL ONE IN WHICH ONLY ONE FRONT AND ONE DIAGONAL REAR WHEEL ARE PERMITTED TO LOCK, UNDER WHICH CONDITION THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SPIN OUT AND CAN BE STEERED DURING A SKID.
