DESIGN OF TUGS FOR HANDLING SUPERTANKERS
The approach to tug design adopted by one tug owner is outlined in relation to the berthing of super tankers at Milford Haven and Bantry Bay. The methods used in handling these large ships are described, together with the development of the design of a family of tugs. A mathematical approach is suggested to enable the number and power of tugs to be calculated in relation to the size of ship to be handled and physical conditions likely to be encountered. This is checked against observed conditions. On such a basis the requirements for handling a 1,000,000 ton tanker can be predicted.
