MOTORCYCLES AND SAFETY. ACCIDENTS REFLECTED IN STATISTICS

A SURVEY IS MADE OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP, NEW REGISTRATIONS (CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO HEADROOM CLASSES), ACCIDENTS INVOLVING PERSONAL INJURY AND THE PERCENTAGE OF MOTORCYCLIST CASUALTIES IN AUSTRIA FOR THE PERIOD 1970-1978. IT CAN BE SEEN THAT SINCE 1973 THE PROPORTION OF MOTORCYCLES IN ALL VEHICLES ON THE ROAD AND THE PROPORTION OF MOTORCYCLES INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS HAVE DEVELOPED IN DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE FASHION AND BECAME MOST MARKED IN 1978. ANALYSIS OF THE ACCIDENTS SHOWS THAT MEN AGED 18-24 ARE OVER-REPRESENTED IN ACCIDENTS, AT WEEKENDS, IN THE SIX MONTHS FROM MAY TO OCTOBER. THE MAIN ACCIDENT CAUSE IS SKIDDING AND COMING OFF THE ROAD. GIVEN AN AVERAGE ANNUAL DISTANCE TRAVELLED OF 4,773 KM (1978 MICRO CENSUS), THERE IS A 7.8 TIMES GREATER RISK OF DEATH FOR MOTORCYCLISTS AND THEIR PASSENGERS THAN FOR CAR OCCUPANTS. THE ACCIDENT RISK IN ITSELF IS 6 TIMES GREATER. OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLISTS INJURED IN 1978 (2,927), 50 FATALLY INJURED, 503 SERIOUSLY INJURED, 693 SLIGHTLY INJURED AND 179 WHOSE DEGREE OF INJURY WAS NOT KNOWN WORE A PROTECTIVE HELMET. (IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT 50 PERCENT OF ALL MOTORCYCLISTS WEAR A HELMET). MEASURES FOR INCREASING ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY ARE DISCUSSED.
