STUDIES OF PLASTICALLY DEFORMED BITUMINOUS LAYERS

THE AUTHOR REPORTS ON THE CAUSES OF PLASTIC DEFORMATIONS (TRACKING GROOVES UP TO 6 CMS IN DEPTH) IN A ROLLED ASPHALT WEARING COURSE 0/12 MM WITH TWO ASPHALT BINDERS 0/12 MM IN A MOTORWAY STRETCH WITH UP TO 6% INCLINE. THE RESULTS OF TESTS CARRIED OUT ON CORE BORINGS AND MIX STUDIES DEMONSTRATE THAT THE DEFORMATION CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO EXCESS FILLER AND BITUMEN CONTENT OF THE LOWER AND ALSO, ON OCCASION, THE UPPER BASECOURSE. ARISING FROM THE DAMAGE TO THE BASECOURSE, AN INCREASED STRESS OCCURRED IN THE MATERIAL IN ROLLED ASPHALT WEARING COURSES, RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE DEFORMATION. A SO-CALLED MIX-SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTIC CURVE COMPARABLE TO THE PROCTOR CURVE WAS DERIVED FROM THE VOLUMETRIC REPRESENTATION OF THE MATERIAL PHASES. THIS MAY BE USED IN ADDITION TO THE PORE VOLUME AND ITS DISTRIBUTION, DEGREE OF SATURATION OF MINERAL MATERIAL-PORE VOLUME WITH BITUMINOUS MORTARS (FILLERS AND BITUMEN) FOR EVALUATING THE MIX BEHAVIOUR.
