BENKELMAN TECHNIQUE AND PROOF ROLLING

BENKELMAN-VERFAHREN UND PROOF-ROLLING....

IN THE COURSE OF TWO RESEARCH PROJECTS MEASUREMENTS WITH THE BENKELMAN BEAM AND THE "PROOF ROLLING" TECHNIQUE WERE STUDIED IN RELATION TO THEIR SUITABILITY FOR RAPID SOIL DENSITY MEASUREMENTS AND THE MEASUREMENT OF UNBOUND ROAD BASES, WITHOUT AFFECTING THE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME. THE ANALYSIS OF THE RESEARCH RESULTS DEMONSTRATES THAT BOTH MEASURING TECHNIQUES CAN SUPPLY RESULTS MORE QUICKLY THAN THE CONVENTIONAL LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS. HOWEVER, SOME SERIOUS LIMITATIONS ARISE IN THE USE OF THE BENKELMAN BEAM, FOR EXAMPLE THE SHUTTING DOWN OF VIBRATING EQUIPMENT IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE MEASURING POINT, HIGH DEPENDENCE ON THE EFFECTIVE WHEEL LOADS AND INTERNAL PRESSURES ETC. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS ON THE BASIS OF THE RESULTS AVAILABLE AND THE PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN DETERMINING DENSITY VALUES FROM DEFORMATION MEASUREMENTS THAT THE "PROOF ROLLING" TECHNIQUE SHOULD BE USED ONLY UNDER LIMITED CONDITIONS. IN GENERAL, ON THE BASIS OF A RANGE OF SPECIMENS, THE ABOVE TEST OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TESTING TECHNIQUES AND THE CONTRACT IS RECOMMENDED.
