INVESTIGATIONS OF ASPHALTIC PAVING MIXTURES RELATIVE TO DEFORMATION OF SURFACES UNDER TRAFFIC
A REVIEW OF PAPERS PRESENTED DURING THE PAST YEAR ON FACTORS INFLUENCING THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTIC PAVING MISTURES IS PRESENTED. ATTENTION IS STILL LARGELY FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TEST FOR STABILITY, ALTHOUGH THE ULTIMATE OBJECT IS THE FORMULATION OF A RATIONAL THEORY OF DESIGN. AFFECTS UPON STABILITY OF SUCH FACTORS AS TYPE AND FINENESS OF SEVERAL FILLERS, AND THE PERCENT AND CONSISTENCY OF BITUMEN WERE STUDIED IN THE LABORATORY. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF VOIDAGE OF AGGREGATE HAS RECEIVED ATTENTION, AND THE DEFINITION OF A RELIABLE TEST FOR VOIDS IS THE OBJECT OF RESEARCH UNDERWAY BY SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS. INVESTIGATORS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES HAVE BROUGHT OUT MANY FACTS OF IMPORTANCE LEADING TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMBINATION OF AGGREGATES, MINERAL FILLER AND ASPHALT TO PRODUCE PAVEMENTS OF HIGH RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION.
