THE INFLUENCE OF AGGREGATES ON THE TENSILE BENDING STRENGTH OF WATER-BOUND ROAD BASES

EINFLUSS DER MINERALSTOFFE AUF DIE BIEGEZUGFESTIGKEIT HYDRAULISCH GEBUNDENER TRAGSCHICHTEN

WATER BOUND ROAD BASES ARE CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT MOVEMENT JOINTS. FINE LATERAL CRACKS DEVELOP WHICH SHOULD BE CLOSELY SPACED AND NARROW IN WIDTH. UNDER TRAFFIC LOADS THE ROAD BASE IS SUBJECTED TO BENDING ACTION. THE TECHNICALLY OPPOSING REQUIREMENTS OF A CLOSE CRACK SPACING AND SIMULTANEOUSLY HIGH BENDING STRENGTH DEMAND COMPROMISES. IN A SERIES OF TESTS THE EFFECTS ON BENDING RESISTANCE OF THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF THE AGGREGATES AND CONTAMINATION FROM SILT AND CRUSHED OR UNCRUSHED MATERIAL WERE INVESTIGATED. FOR THE TEST CYLINDERS CUBES AND PRISMS WITH AGGREGATES FROM SANDSTONE THE VARIATIONS WERE CRUSHED AND UNCRUSHED AGGREGATES, CLEAN OR CONTAMINATED, UPPER OR LOWER SIEVE LINE. DIFFERENCES IN THE RESULTS FOR CRUSHED OR UNCRUSHED AGGREGATES WERE NOT SIGNIFICANT. WITH THE CONTAMINATED AGGREGATES SOME STRENGTHS WERE HIGHER, SOME LOWER THAN THOSE OF THE CLEAN AGGREGATES. UNDER OTHERWISE SIMILAR CONDITIONS THE MIXES FROM THE UPPER SIEVE LINE HAD THE LOWER STRENGTHS. THE RESULTS ARE VALID ONLY FOR THE VARIEGATED SANDSTONE USED WHICH WAS FROM THE MAIN AREA.
