PROGRESS REPORT ON A FIELD EXPERIMENT ON INTRODUCTION OF PLANES OF WEAKNESS IN CONCRETE SLABS

A REPORT IS MADE ON A FIELD EXPERIMENT ON INTRODUCTION OF PLANES OF WEAKNESS IN CONCRETE SLABS OF TWO INCH DEPTH, SPACED AT 40-FOOT INTERVALS ON TANGENT AND CURVE OF A CONCRETE PAVEMENT SECTION. THE PLANES OF WEAKNESS BECAME EFFECTIVE BEFORE THE END OF THE CURING PERIOD. THIS WAS EVIDENCED BY CRACKS THROUGH THE ENTIRE ALAB AT EACH PLANE. INDICATIONS ARE THAT PLANES OF WEAKNESS ARE AN ECONOMICAL AND SATISFACTORY METHOD OF LOCALIZING AND CONTROLLING TRANSVERSE AND LONGITUDINAL CRACKS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS.
