THE ROLLER TEST RIG FOR THE WHEEL/RAIL RESEARCH PROGRAMME IN MUNICH/FREIMANN

DER ROLLPRUEFSTAND FUER DAS RAD/SCHIENE-FORSCHUNGSPROGRAMM IN MUENCHEN-FREIMANN

THE BASIS OF THE ROLLER TESTING RIG IS THAT RAILS ARE REPLACED BY ROLLERS. THE PART OF THE RIG WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THE RAIL CONSISTS OF TWO ROLLERS AND IS CHARACTERISED AS A BASIC CELL. THE RIG HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO STUDY THE ROLLING BEHAVIOUR OF A TRACK TYPE UNIT WITH A SINGLE SET OF WHEELS, THE BEHAVIOUR OF BOGIES AND VEHICLES, AND THE EFFECT OF INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS SUCH AS SUSPENSION, DAMPERS AND MASS DISTRIBUTIONS ON ROLLING BEHAVIOUR. MOREOVER THE EFFECT OF VARIABLE RAIL DATA ON ROLLING BEHAVIOUR IS TO BE EXAMINED. IN THE PROGRAMME TO RESEARCH THE LIMITS OF THE WHEEL/RAIL SYSTEM, A COMPREHENSIVE THEORETICAL SIMULATION MODEL OF THE VEHICLE/ROAD SYSTEM IS TO BE PRODUCED. THE TEST RIG SHOULD ENABLE THE EFFECT OF TRACK PLAY, RAIL GRADIENT, ACCURACY OF RAIL POSITION AND ANY DESIRED COMBINATION OF THESE FACTORS AND THE RAIL PROFILE TO BE EXAMINED. IT ALSO ENABLES DATA TO BE OBTAINED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW VEHICLE COMPONENTS OR COMPLETE RAIL VEHICLES. THE INTERACTION OF THEORETICAL WORK, TESTS ON THE RIG AND TESTS ON SECTIONS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. FINALLY ONGOING AND PLANNED TESTS ARE OUTLINED.
