THE PROBLEM OF REPLACING TRAMS BY TROLLEYBUSES, THE EXPERIMENTAL USE OF THE DUAL MODE BUS, AND THE DEPENDENCE OF THE SYSTEMS ON VARIOUS INFLUENCING FACTORS ARE ILLUSTRATED USING THE EXAMPLE OF URBAN TRANSPORT IN ESSLINGEN. FACTORS CONSIDERED ARE LIFE TIME, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS, TARIFFS, OPERATING COSTS, GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION, INFRASTRUCTURE, FLEXIBILITY, TRAFFIC FLOW, ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY SUPPLY.
