THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT THAWING SALTS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF DISC BRAKES
ZUM EINFLUSS UNTERSCHIEDLICHER TAUSALZE AUF DIE WIRKSAMKEIT VON SCHEIBENBREMSEN
NEW TYPES OF SALT CONTAINING CALCIUM CHLORIDE ARE BEING TESTED WITH A VIEW TO DECREASING THE DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT CAUSED BY DEICING SALTS USED IN WINTER MAINTENANCE. THE OBJECT OF THIS WORK WAS TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF THESE SALTS, COMPARED TO PURE SODIUM CHLORIDE, ON BRAKING. TESTS WERE UNDERTAKEN WITH TWO DIFFERENT CARS WHICH HAD THEIR REAR BRAKES DISCONNECTED, AND SEVERAL SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A TOTAL OF 35 SETS OF LININGS WHICH INCLUDED 8 BASIC TYPES OF LINING. THREE METHODS WERE USED: SPRAYING OF THE BRAKE WITH SALT SOLUTION SHORTLY BEFORE AND DURING THE WHOLE BRAKING PROCESS; SPRAYING OF THE BRAKE WITH SALT SOLUTION JUST 5 SECONDS BEFORE THE START OF BRAKING; MULTIPLE BRAKING WITH SALT SPRAYING AND THUS INFECTING OF THE LINING. THE BRAKING ACTION WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ASSESSED WITHOUT SPRAYING. WITH ALL THREE METHODS THERE WAS AN IMPAIRMENT OF THE BRAKING AS A RESULT OF THE DEICING SALT, WHICH VARIED FROM 5 TO 40 PERCENT IN CONTRAST TO BRAKING WHEN PURE WATER WAS SPRAYED. HOWEVER, AS REGARDS THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SALT AND DIFFERENT LININGS, NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND.
