THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN AUSTRIAN KINDERGARTENS AND SCHOOLS

FOLLOWING A SURVEY OF THE ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN AUSTRIA BETWEEN 1973 AND 1978, THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TRIAL PROGRAMME OF INTENSIVE STUDY FOR THE 5TH GRADE. THESE OBJECTIVES ARE: TRAFFIC EDUCATION SHOULD AWAKEN IN A STUDENT OF THIS AGE GROUP A CRITICAL AND RESPONSIBLE ATTITUDE TO ROAD TRAFFIC, ENHANCE HIS MENTAL AGILITY, MAKE HIM CAPABLE OF CONSCIOUS PERCEPTION AND CONSIDERED ACTION, AND PROVIDE HIM WITH RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS INTENSIVE STUDY IS TO EDUCATE THE STUDENTS IN SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND IN RELIABLE AND RESPONSIBLE PARTICIPATION IN ROAD TRAFFIC. SCHOOL TRAFFIC EDUCATION HAS GROWN OUT OF ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND DEVELOPED INTO A COMPREHENSIVE PROCESS INVOLVING MANY ASPECTS OF HUMAN LIFE.
