ROAD CUTTINGS IN GROUND WATER
STRASSENEINSCHNITTE IM BEREICH DES GRUNDWASSERS
DEEP CUTTINGS ALTER GROUND WATER CONDITIONS. FOR THIS REASON OBSERVATIONS OF GROUND WATER LEVELS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION ARE NEEDED IN ORDER TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE CLAIMS OF ADJOINING PROPERTY OWNERS AND TO TAKE THE APPROPRIATE MEASURES. IF THE FORMATION LEVEL LIES BELOW THE GROUND WATER TABLE, EXPENSIVE TROUGH TYPE SOLUTIONS INVOLVING CONTINUOUS PUMPING ARE REQUIRED. ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR'S TESTS THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A PAVEMENT IS DEPENDENT ON THE WATER CONTENT AND IS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN SATURATED CONDITIONS. IT IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE GOOD DRAINAGE FOR THE SUBBASE. ON THE BASIS OF NUMEROUS PLATE BEARING TESTS THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THE USE OF A WELL GRADED GRAVEL RATHER THAN A FINE SAND FOR THIS LAYER. A WELL DRAINED HORIZONTAL PERCOLATION LAYER IS CHEAPER THAN A TROUGH.
