CORRELATION AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS AS AN AID TO THE INTERPRETATION OF GUSSASPHALT FATIGUE DATA OBTAINED EXPERIMENTALLY

IN EVALUATING LARGE NUMBERS OF TESTS IT WILL BE FOUND USEFUL TO EMPLOY MORE AND MORE THE METHOD OF CORRELATION AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS. WHEN SEVERAL INFLUENCING FACTORS ARE PRESENT IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO USE THE MULTIPLE CORRELATION AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS METHOD IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH NEAR CORRECT RELATIONSHIPS. THE LARGE AMOUNT OF CALCULATION WORK NECESSARY CAN ONLY BE JUSTIFIED WHEN IT CAN BE CARRIED OUT BY A PROGRAMMABLE ELECTRONIC CALCULATING MACHINE. BY WAY OF STATISTICAL TESTING OF THE VARIOUS PARTIAL REGRESSION COEFFICIENTS IT IS POSSIBLE DURING THE CALCULATIONS TO EVALUATE THOSE INFLUENCING FACTORS, WHICH HAVE A DECISIVE OR SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON THE REGRESSION. REGRESSION EQUATIONS ARE ESTIMATES AND THEY HAVE NO FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE STRICT MATHEMATICAL SENSE. IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE QUALITY OF THE REGRESSION ANALYSIS IT IS NECESSARY THEREFORE TO EMPLOY RELATED FACTORS.
