PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN VIRGINIA
PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION IN VIRGINIA IS DESCRIBED. PAVEMENT EVALUATIONS ARE BASED PRIMARILY ON DEFLECTION TESTS AND SERVICEABILITY RATINGS. THE DEFLECTION TESTS ARE MADE WITH A DYNAFLECT TRAILER AND THE SERVICEABILITY RATINGS WITH A BPR-TYPE ROUGHOMETER IN CONJUNCTION WITH A VISUAL SURVEY. PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX EQUATIONS ARE PRESENTED WHICH WERE DEVELOPED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE AASHO ROAD TEST. DEFLECTION TESTS PROVIDE A GUIDE FOR PRELIMINARY PAVEMENT DESIGN. FUTURE PRELIMINARY DESIGNS CAN BE BASED ON EXISTING DESIGNS IN NEARBY AREAS, IF DEFLECTIONS IN THOSE AREAS HAVE BEEN SATISFACTORY. IN VIRGINIA THE CAUSE OR CAUSES OF THE LOSS IN SERVICEABILITY ARE IDENTIFIED. THIS REQUIRES A DETAILED INVESTIGATION, WHICH RECENTLY PAID OFF WHEN IT WAS SHOWN THAT SEEMINGLY SEVERE LONGITUDINAL CRACKING IN FOUR TO SIX YEAR OLD PAVEMENTS HAD BEEN CAUSED BY BRITTLENESS IN THE SURFACE COURSE AND EXTENDED ONLY SOME 1 TO 1 1/2 INCHES INTO THE PAVEMENT.
