STUDY OF SERVICE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALT CONCRETE; PURPOSE, DESCRIPTION AND TRENDS
THE TEN YEAR STUDY OF ASPHALT PAVEMENT BEHAVIOR DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS INSTIGATED BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF INFORMATION PRESENT IN THE DATA OBTAINED FROM THE THEN CURRENT BEHAVIOR STUDIES. A DEPARTMENT STUDY TITLED "ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT STABILITY TESTS AND SERVICE BEHAVIOR," REPORTED IN 1958, AND A STUDY IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS, TITLED "SERVICE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE," PUBLISHED IN 1961 BY THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD, BOTH CONSIDERED DATA OBTAINED AFTER VARYING PERIODS OF PAVEMENT USE. IN COMPARING THE TEST RESULTS OBTAINED AFTER USE WITH PAVEMENT AND MIXTURE CHARACTERISTICS BEFORE USE, THE ASSUMPTION WAS MADE THAT THE ROUTINE PERIODIC CONTROL TESTS DURING CONSTRUCTION CHARACTERIZED THE PAVEMENT AND MIXTURE AT THE EXACT POINTS AT WHICH THE RESAMPLING WAS MADE AFTER TRAFFIC. OBVIOUSLY, THE VALIDITY OF SUCH AN ASSUMPTION CANNOT BE DOCUMENTED. ROUTINE CONTROL TEST RESULTS MADE DURING CONSTRUCTION, EVEN THOUGH ALL WITHIN SPECIFICATION TOLERANCE, HAVE A WIDE VARIATION, FREQUENTLY INDICATING AS MUCH DIFFERENCE IN CHARACTERISTICS AS THAT CAUSED BY SEVERAL YEARS OF AGE AND TRAFFIC. A MORE VALID REFERENCE POINT, OR ORIGINAL CONDITION, WAS NEEDED. THE TEN YEAR STUDY WAS THEREFORE PROPOSED IN WHICH THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERISTICS WERE DETERMINED IMMEDIATELY AFTER CONSTRUCTION AT THE POINTS DESIGNATED FOR RESAMPLING TWICE ANNUALLY FOR TEN YEARS. PROJECT MATERIAL VARIATIONS AND CHANGES IN CHARACTERISTICS DURING CONSTRUCTION WOULD THEN BE ELIMINATED. /AUTHOR/
