THE USE OF GABIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION WHICH IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE LANDSCAPE
LANDSCHAFTSGERECHTES BAUEN MIT GABIONEN
SLOPE SLIPPAGE, RIVER BANK SLOPES, FILL AREAS AND CUTS INTO SLOPES CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY STABILIZED WITH GABIONS (WIRE ROCK - BOXES). THEY ARE SEEN MAINLY IN THE AREAS OF GRANULAR MATERIAL OF LARGE RIVER BEDS, ON DRIFTS CARRYING TRIBUTARY STREAMS, ALLUVIAL BANKS AND FOR TRAINING NATURAL STREAMS IN VALLEYS AND TRIBUTARY VALLEYS OF MOUNTAIN REGIONS, IN PARTICULAR IN THE SOUTHERN ALPINE REGIONS. THE GABION METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION CAN ALSO BE USED IN ALL OUR CENTRAL MOUNTAIN AND HILL REGIONS FOR STABILIZING ROADSIDE SLOPES. IN ORDER TO PREVENT A LACK OF COMPATIBILITY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT OF THESE STRUCTURES -- THEIR APPEARANCE WITH THEIR MAINLY RIGID AND STRAIGHT ALIGNMENTS -- THE AUTHOR DEVELOPS THOUGHTS AND IDEAS ON THEIR LANDSCAPE-RELATED USE AND THE FITTING OF THEM INTO THE LANDSCAPE IN A REASONABLE MANNER. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN FOR THE ARRANGEMENT OF GABION WALLS. IF THE LISTED BASIC GUIDE LINES FOR THE DESIGN OF THE ARRANGEMENT OF THEM ARE FOLLOWED, ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE AND AESTHETICALLY APPROPRIATE STRUCTURES CAN BE PRODUCED EVEN WITH THE RELATIVELY LITTLE VARIABILITY OF GABION BLOCKS.
