FOR A LONG TIME THERE HAS BEEN A NEED FOR A QUICK GEOTECHNICAL MAP DRAWING TECHNIQUE VOR, WHICH WOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR AN OPTIMUM SELECTION TO BE MADE FROM THREE DIMENSIONAL ALIGNMENT POSSIBILITIES. IN THIS FIELD TOPOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL SURFACE CONDITIONS AND UNDERGROUND CONDITIONS UP TO A DEPTH OF 30 M DEEP PLAY A LARGE ROLE. FOR THE LATTER AREA SEISMIC AND GEOELECTRIC TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE HITHERTO. THE SEISMIC APPROACH REQUIRES A HIGH LEVEL OF ENERGY, WHILST THE IMPROVED ELECTRONIC MEASURING METHOD, HERE TERMED THE ARGUS TECHNIQUE, DOES NOT REQUIRE CABLES. THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS OF THE ENTIRE STRESS MEASUREMENT PART HAS A WEIGHT OF ONLY 1 KG, THE POWER SUPPLY UNIT WEIGHS 8 KG, SO THAT BOTH DEVICES ARE LIGHT AND MAY BE CARRIED BY ONE MAN. THIS TECHNIQUE HAS PROVED ITSELF IN SEVERAL THOUSAND PROBES FOR RESERVOIR, GROUNDWATER AND SUB-SOIL INVESTIGATIONS. ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE CURRENT SUPPLY AND THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AS WELL AS FOUR COMPLETED MEASUREMENT DIAGRAMS ARE PROVIDED.
