THE USE AND IMPROVEMENT OF PARAFFIN RICH BITUMEN FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES

ANWENDUNG UND VERBESSERUNG PARAFFINREICHER BITUMEN FUER STRASSENBAUZWECKE

AS A RESULT OF THE CONVERSION TO OTHER ENERGY SOURCES AND INCREASING REQUIREMENTS, PARAFFIN-RICH PETROLEUMS HAVE BEEN USED IN INCREASING QUANTITIES IN THE PEOPLES' REPUBLIC OF POLAND AND IN THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE SIXTIES. IN THE PROCESSING, BITUMENS WITH INCREASED PARAFFIN CONTENT ARE USED. PARAFFIN CAN PROVE TO BE A DISADVANTAGE WHEN USED IN CERTAIN QUANTITIES AND WHEN COMBINED WITH THE PARTICULAR PROPERTIES OF OTHER CONTAINED MATERIALS. PARAFFIN-RICH BITUMEN WITH A BITUMEN CONTENT UP TO THREE PERCENT IS DESIGNATED BY A "P". ITS TEMPERATURE/VISCOSITY BEHAVIOUR DEVIATES FROM DISTILLATION BITUMEN SO THAT IT CANNOT BE DESCRIBED USING THE PENETRATION INDEX. PARAFFIN-RICH BITUMENS POSSESS LOWER VISCOSITY AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES THAN THOSE WITH LOW PARAFFIN CONTENTS. WITH SUFFICIENT ADHESION TO THE STONE IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER THEY CAN HOWEVER BE USED FOR THE SAME CONSTRUCTION METHODS AS LOW PARAFFIN CONTENT BITUMENS, ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR. DIFFICULTIES CAN ARISE WITH CUT-BACK BITUMENS AND BITUMEN EMULSIONS FROM PARAFFIN-RICH BITUMEN. USING STANDARDISATION WEAK AREAS CAN BE OVERCOME. THE NEW STANDARD REMOVES THE PREVIOUS LIMITATION ON DISTILLED PREPARATIONS OF THE PETROLEUM AND PERMITS THE ADDITION OF MATERIALS WHICH IMPROVE QUALITY, FOR EXAMPLE PLASTIC AND ELASTIC WASTE, POLYETHYLENES OR USED TYRE RUBBER.
