TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUTURE PROPULSION SYSTEMS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND UTILIZATION OF ENERGY

ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN ZUKUENFTIGER ANTRIEBSSYSTEME UNTER BESONDERER BERUECKSICHTIGUNG VON UMWELTSCHUTZ UND ENERGIEEINSATZ

THIS PAPER ILLUSTRATES VARIOUS CONVENTIONAL AND NON-CONVENTIONAL PROPULSION SYSTEMS FOR POWERED VEHICLES AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ALTERNATIVE POWER UNITS SUCH AS ELECTRIC MOTORS, HYBRID DRIVES, GAS TURBINES, STEAM ENGINE, STIRLING ENGINE, ENGINES WITH INTERNAL CONTINUOUS COMBUSTION - AND ASSESSES THEM ACCORDING TO THE CRITERIA OF NOXIOUS EMISSIONS, NOISE, UTILIZATION OF ENERGY, FUEL SENSITIVITY, STORAGE DENSITY OF FUEL ENERGY, MANUFACTURING COSTS, STATE OF DEVELOPMENT. AS REGARDS FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE PETROL ENGINE AND DIESEL ENGINE ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES OF REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION (SECONDARY TREATMENT OF EXHAUST GASES, LEANER FUEL MIXTURES, BEDDING-IN CONCEPTS, STRATIFIED CHARGE, IMPROVEMENTS IN COMBUSTION). WITH RESPECT TO ALTERNATIVE FUELS THE OPINION IS, THAT FOR MIDDLE TO LONG TERM ASPECTS METHANOL AND HYDROGEN ARE BEST SUITED TO REPLACE MINERAL OIL FUELS. IN CONCLUSION ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE STUDY ON THE RANKING OF FUTURE EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR DRIVE SYSTEMS.
