A RECORDING MECHANISM FOR A ROAD ROUGHNESS INDICATOR

AN IMPROVED DESIGN OF ROUGHNESS MEASURING AND RECORDING MECHANISM IS DESCRIBED WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND FITTED TO A UNITED STATES BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS TYPE ROUGHOMETER, NOW IN USE WITH THE COUNTRY ROADS BOARD OF VICTORIA FOR PAVEMENT EVALUATION WORK. THE MECHANISM COMPRISES AN OPTICAL DISPLACEMENT MEASURING DEVICE TOGETHER WITH ELECTRONIC PROCESSING AND RECORDING EQUIPMENT ENABLING ROAD ROUGHNESS, DISTANCE TRAVELLED AND SPEED OF TRAVEL TO BE DETERMINED. THE OPTICAL SENSOR INCORPORATES PRECISION GLASS GRATINGS WHICH CONVERT WHEEL DISPLACEMENT TO ELECTRICAL PULSES. THE PULSES ARE COUNTED ELECTRONICALLY ENABLING THE TOTAL DISPLACEMENT OR ROUGHNESS TO BE DETERMINED AND PRINTED OUT AUTOMATICALLY, ON COMPLETION OF A PREDETERMINED DISTANCE TRAVELLED, TOGETHER WITH CODED INFORMATION REPRESENTING THE HIGHWAY, LOCATION AND ANY OTHER RELEVANT FEATURES. THE UNIT, WHICH IS FULLY TRANSISTORIZED, OPERATES FROM THE TOWING VEHICLE BATTERY. /AUTHOR/
