PAVEMENT INVESTIGATION USING SH WAVES: CASE OF SINGLE SURFACE LAYER
THE USE OF CONTINUOUSLY EXCITED SURFACE WAVES IN THE INVESTIGATION OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURES IS WELL ESTABLISHED AS AN EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE. THE WAVE MOTION USUALLY EXCITED AND OBSERVED IS THE RAYLEIGH WAVE. INVESTIGATION OF LAYERED STRUCTURES USING SH (HORIZONTALLY POLARIZED SHEAR) WAVES HAS, TO DATE, BEEN CONFINED TO LOVE TYPE STRUCTURES. A METHOD IS DESCRIBED OF USING SH WAVES TO INVESTIGATE A STRUCTURE CONSISTING OF A SINGLE SURFACE LAYER OF RIGIDITY GREATER THAN THE SUBJACENT MEDIUM. MATHEMATICAL PREDICTIONS ARE DEVELOPED AND USED TO INTERPRET EXPERIMENTAL LABORATORY AND FIELD OBSERVATIONS. /AUTHOR/
