REFLECTIONS CONCERNING TRAFFIC FLOW ON EXTRA WIDE TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS
BETRACHTUNGEN UEBER DEN VERKEHRSABLAUF AUF UEBERBREITEN ZWEISPURIGEN STRASSEN
ANALYSIS OF THE DATA USED SHOWS THAT THE TRAFFIC FLOW ON TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS WHICH ARE WIDER THAN NORMAL IS DISTINGUISHED BY THE FACT THAT THE REDUCTION OF AVERAGE SPEED ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED TRAFFIC DENSITY IS NOT AS STEEP AS IS THE CASE ON HIGHWAYS OF NORMAL WIDTH. THIS MEANS THAT THE LIMITS FOR ASSESSING QUALITY CLASSES FOR THE LEVEL OF SERVICE CAN, IN THE MEAN, BE SET SOME 10% HIGHER THAN FOR TWO-LANE ROADS OF NORMAL WIDTH. THE LIMITS OF THE RANGE OF ALMOST CONSTANT TRAFFIC SPEEDS FOR HIGHER TRAFFIC DENSITIES CANNOT BE DETERMINED FROM THE DATA PRESENTLY AVAILABLE AND REQUIRES FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS.
