TESTING THE MIX DESIGN OF FRESH CONCRETE

THERE ARE MANY TECHNIQUES FOR DETERMINING THE CORRECT WATER/CEMENT RATIO FOR MOST CONCRETE PROPERTIES. THOSE COVERED IN DIN 1048 (CONCRETE STANDARD) AND DIN 52171 (FRESH CONCRETE ANALYSIS) ARE CRITICALLY EXAMINED AND COMPARED WITH THOSE METHODS TREATED IN THE LITERATURE. THESE ARE GRAVIMETRIC, CHEMICAL, ELECTRICAL AND NUCLEAR PHYSICAL METHODS. NONE OF THE TECHNIQUES DISCUSSED MET ALL REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS THE USE OF SIMPLE EQUIPMENT, THE SPEED OF OPERATION, CAPACITY TO BE CARRIED OUT BY SEMI-SKILLED STAFF, LITTLE LIKELIHOOD OF ERRORS AND SATISFACTORY TEST RESULTS, USABILITY WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF THE CORRECT MIX COMPOSITION AND ADEQUATE DIMENSIONS FOR THE AVERAGE SPECIMENS. IF ALLOWANCES ARE MADE FOR THE FEW TESTS WHICH ARE INTENDED MAINLY FOR SITE LABORATORIES, THESE MAY BE EMPLOYED IN THE PLACE OF SUBSEQUENT CUBE TESTING. THEY SHOULD, HOWEVER, BE FURTHER IMPROVED.
