CIRCULAR ON THE CONTROL OF SLIPPERINESS /IN FRENCH/

RESULTS OF RESEARCH ON SLIPPERINESS ARE PRESENTED. THE EFFECT OF A WATER FILM ON THE SURFACING, THE INFLUENCE OF THE SURFACE TEXTURE, NATURE OF AGGREGATES, AND SPEED ON THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION ARE DISCUSSED. RECOMMENDED VALUES ARE PRESENTED IN TABULATED FORM. TO OBTAIN GOOD ADHESION, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO PREVENT WATER FROM ACCUMLATING BY ADEQUATE CROSS-FALL AND LATERAL DRAINAGE; CHIPPINGS MUST BE HARD AND HAVE RESISTANCE TO POLISHING; THE SURFACE TEXTURE OF CARRIAGEWAYS CARRYING FAST TRAFFIC MUST BE SUFFICIENTLY ROUGH. THE FOLLOWING PROPOSALS ARE PUT FORWARD: (1) BITUMINOUS MIXTURES MUST CONTAIN A HIGH PROPORTION OF HARD CHIPPINGS (10 MM OR OVER) AND COMPACTION METHODS MUST BE STRICTLY CONTROLLED. (2) HIGH- QUALITY COATINGS MUST ENSURE DURABILITY (CAREFUL SELECTION OF AGGREGATES AND APPLICATION). (3) CONCRETE MUST CONTAIN HARD SAND MORTAR AND TRANSVERSE GROOVING MUST BE CARRIED OUT. THE TEXTURE OF THE SURFACING MUST BE THE SAME THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH OF ONE CURVE. /LCPC/RRL/
