GENERAL HIGHWAY MATTERS-CZECHOSLOVAKIA

RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED ON THE BEHAVIOR OF HIGHWAYS UNDER SHOCK ABSORPTION AND THE ELABORATION OF A METHOD OF DIMENSIONING BASED ON PARAMETERS OF MATERIALS AND OF SUPER- IMPOSED LAYERS WHICH ARE DETERMINED BY DYNAMIC METHODS. A NEW METHOD OF LOADING TESTS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF SHOCK ABSORPTION WAS ELABORATED. THE ABSORPTION OR THE REGULATION OF THE DURATION OF THE EFFECT PRODUCED BY THE BLOW IS FIXED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT IT CORRESPONDS TO THE EFFECTS PRODUCED BY THE WHEEL OF A UTILITY VEHICLE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 50 KM/H. THE APPARATUS DELIVERING THE BLOW IS CONSTRUCTED ON THE HYDRAULIC PRINCIPLE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO VARY NOT ONLY THE HEIGHT OF THE FALL AND THE DURATION OF THE BLOW, BUT ALSO THE WEIGHT OF THE LOAD. THE DEFORMATIONS OF THE HIGHWAY DUE TO SHOCK ABSORPTION ARE DETECTED AND REGISTERED ON VIBROGRAPHS (SEISMOGRAPHS) WHICH ARE EXTERNAL. RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS ARE SHOWN IN TWO TYPES OF GRAPHS. THE FIRST EXPRESSES THE DECREASE OF THE OUTPUT AS A FUNCTION OF THE DISTANCE FROM THE POINT OF IMPACT. THE OTHER TRANSLATES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FORCE OF IMPACT AND THE DEFORMITY. THIS RELATIONSHIP IS NORMALLY RECTILINEAR AND TRANSLATES THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE CARRIAGEWAY. A METHOD IS DESCRIBED WHICH IS USED TO MEASURE THE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE TO SIMPLE BENDING. THE INFLUENCE OF REPEATED LOADS ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF RIGID AERODROME RUNWAYS ARE DESCRIBED. AN EXPERIMENT SHOWS A LINEAR DEPENDENCE OF THE PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS ON THE NUMBER OF REPEATED LOADS AT THE POINT WHERE AN EXPANSION JOINT RESTS ON A RIGID FOUNDATION. NUMEROUS MEASUREMENTS MADE ON HIGHWAYS WITH CONCRETE SURFACINGS, BITUMINOUS SURFACING AND PAVED HIGHWAYS HAVE SHOWN THAT, IN PROPORTION TO THE INCREASE IN THEIR RUGOSITY, EQUALING, WITHIN CERTAIN LIMITS IN A LINEAR FASHION, THE COEFFICIENT OF RESISTANCE TO SKIDDING INCREASES. EXTENSIVE TESTS IN THE LABORATORY USING DIFFERENT AGGREGATES AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURE OF PERVIOUS CONCRETE DRAINS CONFIRM THAT ALL-IN GRAVEL IS MORE SUITABLE THAN CRUSHED GRAVEL BECAUSE IT GIVES BETTER PERMEABILITY AND RESISTANCE. CONCRETE AGGREGATES COMPOSED OF SEVERAL GRADINGS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE BETTER THAN THOSE OF A SINGLE GRADING. PLASTIC CONCRETES WITH BINDERS OF A SOLID EPOXY RESIN BASE SHOW CONSIDERABLE RESISTANCE TO TENSION AND PERMIT THE MANUFACTURE IN PERMEABLE CONCRETE OF DRAINS WITH THIN WALLS.
