RIDING QUALITY OF ROADS - GREAT BRITAIN
AFTER RECALLING THAT THREE TYPES OF APPARATUS ARE USED FOR THE APPRAISAL OF THE RIDING QUALITY (PROFILOMETER, BUMP INTEGRATOR, AND STRAIGHT-EDGE), THE REPORT STRESSES THE NEED FOR SURFACINGS OF HIGH QUALITY SUITABLE FOR HIGH-SPEED VEHICLES. ABOVE ALL, THIS GOAL IS ATTAINED BY SELECTING SURFACING MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR MACHINE LAYING, BUT A COMPROMISE BETWEEN A HIGH OUTPUT AND ACCURACY MUST BE FOUND. A REVIEW IS MADE OF THE SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ACHIEVED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE NEED FOR IMPROVING THE RIDING QUALITY OF CONCRETE AS WELL AS THAT OF BLACK TOP. THE REFERENCE TO SKIDDING DEALS WITH THE SWEEPING OF CONCRETE SURFACE AND ALLUSION IS MADE TO THE NOISE PROBLEM. /AUTHOR/
