GENERAL HIGHWAY MATTERS - FRANCE

SPECIAL EFFORT WAS MADE IN FRANCE TO UNDERSTAND THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF HIGHWAYS AND TO DEDUCE A RATIONAL METHOD OF DIMENSIONING. A MATHEMATICAL METHOD WAS DEVELOPED FOR REDUCING THE VISCO-ELASTICITY LINEAR PROBLEM TO AN ELASTIC PROBLEM. DYNAMIC PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN SOLVED FOR MOVING LOADS ON A SINGLE-LAYER SYSTEM AND IMPULSES AT THE SURFACE OF THE SOIL. A RHEOLOGICAL MODEL WAS USED FOR LABORATORY TESTS ON THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS WITHIN THE HIGHWAYS. THE BEHAVIOR OF GRANULAR MATERIALS WAS STUDIED WITH REGARD TO THE ELASTIC HYPOELASTIC FIELD, AND THE RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE. LA CROIX DEFLECTOGRAPH, WHICH ENABLES THE MEASUREMENT UP TO 10,000 DEFLECTIONS PER DAY, IS USED IN COMBINATION WITH STATISTICAL METHODS TO OFFER STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. GOODMANS VIBRATORS COMPLETE THE EQUIPMENT OF CHECKING HIGHWAYS. A PRACTICAL METHOD FOR DIMENSIONING CARRIAGEWAYS WAS APPROVED BASED ON THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS AND OBSERVATIONS, AND MORE PARTICULARLY ON THE RESULTS OF AASHO TESTS. THIS METHOD PERMITS THE CALCULATION OF THE OVERALL CARRIAGEWAY THICKNESS REQUIRED TO SUPPORT A TRAFFIC EQUIVALENT CORRESPONDING TO TRAFFIC ESTIMATES BY THE ENGINEERS FOR THE NORMAL LIFE OF THE HIGHWAY. TWO STRENGTHENING METHODS ARE USED: ONE BASED ON THE HYPOTHESIS OF THE PROPORTIONALITY OF THICKNESS OF LAYERS OF COATED MATERIALS FOR STRENGTHENING AND OF THE LOGARITHIMS OF DEFLECTION. THE OTHER METHOD IS BASED ON THE RESULTS OF CHECKING WITH THE LA CROIX DEFLECTOGRAPH AND ON STATISTICAL INTERPRETATION. GOOD PROGRESS IN UNIFORMITY OF HIGHWAYS IS NOTED DUE TO THE USE OF SPREADERS FOR THICK LAYERS OF COATED MATERIALS, AND OF SLIP FORM PAVERS FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. IMPORTANT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE ON SURFACE AND SUB-SURFACE DRAINAGE NETWORKS, AND ON THE QUESTION OF ICING OF HIGHWAYS.
