A NEW METHOD IN CORRELATION STUDY OF PAVEMENT DEFLECTION AND CRACKING
THE AUTHOR FOUND A NEW METHOD FOR PAVEMENT DEFLECTION STUDY BASED ON SLOPE OF DEFLECTION. THIS NEW BASIS IS DERIVED FROM A TYPICAL DEFLECTION CURVE BY MEANS OF BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE STRENGTH OF MATERIALS. RESULTS OF FIELD TESTS AND OBSERVATIONS ON TEST HIGHWAYS ARE USED TO SUPPORT THE METHOD. IN VERIFYING ITS RELIABILITY, EXISTING DATA ON TEST HIGHWAYS FROM THE VIRGINIA COUNCIL OF HIGHWAY INVESTIGATION AND RESEARCH ARE UTILIZED. APPROXIMATE SLOPES OF DEFLECTIONS ARE CALCULATED OUT FROM THE DATA ALREADY AVAILABLE. BOTH THE AVERAGE AND THE INDIVIDUAL SLOPE OF DEFLECTIONS ARE USED FOR CORRELATION STUDY. THE AVERAGE SLOPE OF DEFLECTIONS ARE PLOTTED VERSUS THE TOTAL THICKNESS OF ASPHALT LAYERS. IN STUDYING THE INDIVIDUAL SLOPE OF DEFLECTION, CAREFUL VISUAL INSPECTIONS OF PAVEMENTS CONDITIONS AT OR CLOSELY NEAR EACH TEST SITE WERE MADE. A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS FOLLOWED THEN AND THE PROBABILITY OF PAVEMENT CRACKING IS PLOTTED VERSUS INDIVIDUAL SLOPE OF DEFLECTION. A DISTINCT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLOPE OF DEFLECTION AND THE PROBABILITY OF PAVEMENT CRACKING IS PRESENTED. FOR CORRELATION STUDY OF THE AVERAGE SLOPE OF DEFLECTION, FORTY /40/ TEST PROJECTS ARE USED. AMONG THOSE, THIRTY-NINE OF THEM, BOTH WITH OR WITHOUT STABILIZATION IN SUB-BASE, FOLLOW THE CRITERIA. ONE TEST ROAD, CONSISTING OF A MORE RIGID BASE IS THE ONLY EXCEPTION. TWO SUGGESTIONS FOR SECURING MORE ACCURATE DATA ARE ALSO MENTIONED. FINALLY, THE AUTHOR HOPES THAT THIS ARTICLE WILL BE REGARDED NOT AS AN END BUT AS A GOOD BEGINNING TO ENCOURAGE OTHER ENGINEERS TO SET UP MORE EXPERIMENTAL PROJECTS ALONG SIMILAR LINES TO THE AUTHORS THESIS AND TO REPORT THEIR FINDINGS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. /AUTHOR/
