VIBRATORY STUDY OF STABILIZED LAYERS OF PAVEMENT IN RUNWAY AT RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE
PRIOR TO REHABILITATION, THE RUNWAY CONSISTED OF AN 8-IN. PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE /PCC/ PAVEMENT THAT WAS PLACED OVER AN 8-IN. SAND-CLAY GRAVEL BASE ON THE EXISTING CLAY SUBGRADE . THE REHABILITATED PORTION OF THE WEST N-S RUNWAY CONSISTED OF A 6-IN. LIME-STABILIZED CLAY SUBGRADE, AN 8-IN. LIME-STABILIZED SAND-CLAY SUBBASE COURSE, AND A 6-IN. CEMENT-STABILIZED CRUSHED CONCRETE BASE COURSE. A 2-1/2-IN. BINDER COURSE AND A 1-1/2-IN. SURFACE COURSE OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WERE PLACED OVER THIS INTERIOR PORTION. VIBRATORY TESTING TECHNIQUES WERE USED AT THREE LOCATIONS ON THIS PAVEMENT TO DETERMINE THE ELASTIC MODULUS OF EACH OF THE STABILIZED LAYERS IMMEDIATELY AFTER CONSTRUCTION, 1 YEAR AFTER CONSTRUCTION, AND 2-1/2 YEARS AFTER CONSTRUCTION. THE VIBRATORY TECHNIQUES USED AND THE RESULTS OF THE THREE SERIES OF TESTS CONDUCTED ARE DISCUSSED ALONG WITH THE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE. /AUTHOR/
