REVIEW OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY RESEARCH IN WASTE TREATMENT FOR WATERCRAFT

The program is designed to develop and demonstrate new and unique treatment systems for use on commercial freighters, ferries, and recreational watercraft. This presentation describes the recirculating waste treatment systems that have been successfully evaluated onboard an operating vessel. The discussion includes a presentation of the treatment capabilities reliability; operation and maintenance requirements; limitations; and economics of each system. The suitability of the treated effluent as a flush water and the potential problems associated with continual water reuse are also considered.
