RESEARCH IN SWEDEN IN THE FIELD OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

IN RECENT YEARS THE SWEDISH STATE ROAD INSTITUTE HAS CONDUCTED A LARGE NUMBER OF LABORATORY BEARING TESTS ON ARTIFICIAL BASE COURSES ON VARIOUS SUBBASES, AS WELL AS FIELD TESTS ON BOTH TEST PAVEMENTS AND IN-SERVICE ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. THESE HAVE BEEN RECENTLY DOCUMENTED IN INSTITUTE REPORT 77, "INVESTIGATIONS AS TO THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF SOILS AND DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS ACCORDING TO THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY". A MAJOR CONCLUSION IS THAT ALTHOUGH FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS AND SOILS ARE NOT IDEAL ELASTIC MATERIALS IT SEEMS POSSIBLE AND FEASIBLE TO USE THE FORMULAS OF ELASTIC THEORY TO CONSTRUCT A DESIGN METHOD BASED ON DETERMINATION OF THE MODULI OF ELASTICITY OF THE PAVEMENT AND THE DIFFERENT LAYERS OF SUPPORTING SOILS. THUS IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO DESIGN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS IS NOW DONE FOR RIGID PAVEMENTS. WHILE BASICALLY THE SAME FORMULAS CAN BE USED FOR FLEXIBLE AND RIGID PAVEMENTS, IT SEEMS NECESSARY TO EXPRESS THE FORMER AS MULTILAYERED SYSTEMS, AS THE SUPPORTING SOIL UNDER A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT RARELY CAN BE CONSIDERED HOMOGENEOUS. TEST RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPH FORM, AND A DESIGN PROCEDURE IS OUTLINED.
