FLEXIBLE-PAVEMENT DESIGN BY THE GROUP INDEX METHOD
A METHOD OF DESIGN, BASED MAINLY ON GROUP INDEX AND HEAVY TRAFFIC, HAS BEEN USED BY THE MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO DETERMINE TOTAL THICKNESS TO RECOMMEND FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. UP UNTIL 1947 A 6-IN. BASE WAS USED AS THE STANDARD THICKNESS FOR HEAVY TRAFFIC. BECAUSE OF RAPID DETERIORATION OF ROADS, A NEW METHOD WAS DEVELOPED USING THE GROUP INDEX AS A SOIL CLASSIFICATION TOOL ALONG WITH BEARING CAPACITY TO OBTAIN THE PAVEMENT THICKNESS. CASE STUDIES ARE PRESENTED OF FIVE ROADS DESIGNED USING THIS PROCEDURE. METHODS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF SECONDARY ROADS ARE GIVEN.
