INVESTIGATION OF LOAD TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF DOWELS
A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED ON THE LOAD TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF DOWELS USED IN AIRFIELD PAVEMENT EXPANSION JOINTS. FIELD INSTALLATION AND DOWEL AND SLAB INSTRUMENTATION WERE DISCUSSED. A SPECIALLY-DESIGNED CART FOR APPLYING SINGLE WHEEL LOADS WAS DESCRIBED AND DATA OBTAINED AS A RESULT OF PRELIMINARY TESTS USING A 50,000-POUND LOAD WAS PRESENTED. PLANS FOR APPLICATION OF THE DATA OBTAINED TO THE DESIGN OF A TEST FACILITY FOR EVALUATION OF LOAD TRANSFER DEVICES IN GENERAL WAS DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
