NEED FOR PROPER DESIGN AND FIELD CONTROL OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT
RESEARCH CONDUCTED OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS BY THE ARIZONA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT IS REPORTED. THE MAJOR ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS WERE STABILITY, DURABILITY, PERMEABILITY, FATIGUE RESISTANCE, AND FRACTURE (TENSILE) STRENGTH. THE DATA ARE TAKEN FROM 25 PROJECTS IN ROADWAY TESTING. EMPHASIS IN THIS REPORT IS PLACED ON VOIDS CONTENT. A MATRIX OF THE FIVE MIX PROPERTIES PLOTTED AGAINST ASPHALT CONTENT, ASPHALT VISCOSITY, VOIDS, AND FILLER GIVES AS LOW OR HIGH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LATTER TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED PROPERTIES.
