REPORT OF SUBCOMMITTEE ON MOTOR TRUCK IMPACT STUDIES, BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS INVESTIGATION
THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE PROPER STRESS ALLOWANCE FOR IMPACT LOADING HAS IMPELLED A LARGE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH WORK FROM WHICH MANY IMPORTANT FACTS HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. MOTOR TRUCK OPERATIONS ON HIGHWAYS INVOLVE FOUR FACTORS WHOSE VARIATIONS EXERT MAJOR INFLUENCES ON THE VERTICAL REACTIONS BETWEEN THE TRUCK WHEEL AND THE ROAD SURFACE. WHEN PNEUMATIC TIRES ARE USED THE IMPACT PRESSURE SELDOM EXCEEDS TWICE THAT OF THE STATIC WHEEL LOAD, WHEREAS FOR THE SOLID TIRES, THE IMPACT MAY BE FIVE OR SIX TIMES THE STATIC WHEEL LOAD PRESSURE.
