STRENGTHENING OF PAVEMENTS
THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE VARIOUS METHODS OF STRENGTHENING EXISTING AIRCRAFT PAVEMENTS AND IMPROVING THE SURFACE QUALITY AND LONGITUDINAL PROFILE OF RUNWAYS. IT INCLUDES A REFERENCE TO THE TESTING OF RUNWAY STRENGTH, TOGETHER WITH SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE USE OF CONCRETE AND BITUMINOUS MATERIALS FOR STRENGTHENING PURPOSES. SINCE MANY AIRPORTS HAVE TO BE KEPT IN OPERATION WHILE THE PAVED AREAS ARE STRENGTHENED, MENTION IS MADE OF THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. REFERENCE IS ALSO MADE TO THE SURFACE TREATMENT OF THE CONCRETE AND ASPHALT TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF HYDROPLANING DURING ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND TO IMPROVE THE STANDARDS OF BRAKING. /TRRL/
