CURRENT BRITISH PAVEMENT DESIGN

THIS PAPER EXAMINES BRIEFLY THE HISTORY OF AIRCRAFT PAVEMENTS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESIGNED BUILT AND TRAFFICKED SINCE THE LATE 1930S; IT EXPLAINS WHY PARTICULAR DECISIONS HAVE BEEN TAKEN WHICH HAVE LED TO THE DESIGN METHODS CURRENTLY USED. THE TYPES OF PAVEMENT RECOMMENDED FOR FUTURE CONSTRUCTION ARE THOSE ALREADY PROVEN BY AIRCRAFT TO BE THE MOST SATISFACTORY IN USE AND ARE LIMITED TO THREE - PLAIN UNREINFORCED CONCRETE (RIGID), CONTINUOUS REINFORCED CONCRETE SURFACED WITH BITUMINOUS COURSES (COMPOSITE), AND CEMENT, BITUMEN OR TARBOUND BASES SURFACED WITH BITUMINOUS COURSES (FLEXIBLE). THE DESIGN CHART IS GIVEN FOR THE DESIGN OF EACH OF THESE THREE TYPES OF PAVEMENT FOR VARYING AIRCRAFT LOADS EVALUATED BY THE UNITED KINGDOM LOAD CLASSIFICATION NUMBER (LCN) SYSTEM. FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN AND PAVEMENT CLASSIFICATION PURPOSES EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT AIRCRAFT EVALUATIONS MAY BE CATEGORIZED INTO SEVEN LOAD CLASSIFICATION GROUPS (LCG). THIS GROUPING PERMITS THE USE OF A SINGLE AIRCRAFT LCN APPLICABLE TO EACH OF THE THREE PAVEMENT TYPES, THE LCN BEING THAT CALCULATED FOR A RIGID PAVEMENT AT 1 = 1016 MM FROM THE ALL-UP WEIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT, ITS UNDERCARRIAGE CHARACTERISTICS AND ITS TIRE PRESSUES. IN ADDITION TO STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS THE NEED TO PROVIDE PAVEMENT SURFACES OF HIGH STABILITY AND ACCEPTABLE TEXTURE FOR THE SAFE OPERATIONS OF AIRCRAFT IS DISCUSSED. /TRRL/
